I'm trying to revive a T87D transmission and could use a little assistance. I'm a novice when it comes to trannys. This one is missing one shift lever and the pin that connected it to the fork. I never got to see the original. In the parts book this would be 7290 for the lever and 7241 for the pin. Once you get to searching for part numbers those show up several times depending on the version of the transmission.
Right now when I move the existing lever back and forth it just locks up. Otherwise everything rolls smoothly and it shifts from forward to reverse easily moving the gear back and forth by hand. Any suggestions or advice greatly appreciated.
As for the parts, my books suggests 21A-7290 and -7241. I wouldn't hesitate to reach out to Van Pelt and talk to them and lean on their experience. They would also be a good place to get the parts from.
I checked and realized I'd found the listing on Vanpelt's site earlier but it says it's for a car and looks like they are unavailable. No photo. I found this one on eBay but it's an 8A 7290
So, what is the application for this transmission? It looks like a 53+ remote shift HD 3 speed. The numbers in the drawing are the basic part number for the particular parts. You need to know the application, then go to the text in the catalog to find the proper prefix and suffix for the application to complete the part number. In my catalog (1955 version), drawing number P-1377 is for 53-55 3 speed heavy duty. As far as I know, a remote shift was never offered in the 48-52 trucks except for the light duty (F1) 3 speed, 50-52, or the parcel delivery.
53-55 3 speed HD low and reverse gear lever assy., 2J 7290-B. It was serviced with the shaft and nut.
The 8A part in your ebay link is for a 53-54 LD 3 speed.
An excellent question. I have little information. I picked it up locally and it was advertised as a Ford but is it? There seem to be few of these around and I just want to get it working properly and put it up for sale. If I can't find the parts I can have my friend machine them but then I'll owe him another favour!
I suspected that lever was LD. Obviously too short for mine. 2J 7290-B I cannot find in the parts book or anywhere on the interweb
Try B6Y 7290-A. That's the number for the same part in the 56/57 catalog. Part numbers are regularly updated and superceded all the time. May or may not interchange, the catalogs do not show that, and there's nothing to say your trans is not earlier or later than the time frame we're discussing, anyway.
B6Y-7290-A does not interchange with 2J-7290-C, but B5C-7290-A does.
Interesting. None of my books has a B5C. My 56 catalog shows the 2J still being used for HD3 speed. The 57 catalog shows a medium duty for 100/250 using a B6C part, and the HD in all series using the B6Y. The mud is getting muddier.
Talk about muddier! I found this nice example on eBay. The levers are in good condition and clearly they are one with the pins unlike the picture I found in the book which shows them being fastened with nuts.
