I have a 79 f150 ranger xlt 4x4 with a 400 Cid engine.oil pan is a front sump so when draining, oil hits the dif and makes a mess.other than the mess should I change to a rear sump and pan to avoid any other problems from having a front sump and pan?the engine i believe is a 1980 and has just been rebuilt and I haven't installed engine yet.i didn't know if it's possible that the pan could possibly be damaged by hitting the dif or any other front-end parts because it's a front sump and pan.
Should be a rear sump oil pan in the 1st place. 2wd got a front sump. If you replace the pan you also have to change the pick up tube and the stud to attach it to. Easier to make a cardboard funnel/shield to direct the oil away from the diff. Or take a large funnel and cut a 1/2 moon out of the upper lip edge and put it in there as a redirect to your oil catch pan. Make sense?
If you off road it hard, yes you can hit the oil pan on a front sump swapped in 460 with the front axle differential. It only put a dent in the pan, no hole.
