Can anyone tell me what is the diff. between a 400 oil pan for a car and a truck? How many quarts car/truck? What about dip stick in the front & in the pan? Is there a diff. between a 4x4 and a 4x2 pan? A truck pan should drain from the back..... correct? My pan drains from the side.... all over my twin I/s. Can anyone tell me of a good aftermarket oil pan for a 79'f-250 4x2 400v8 I plan on pulling 5-7k lbs.
The 4x2's had a single sump pan. The 4x4's had a double sump pan. It all depends on the suspension. When I was growing up building Jeeps. We use to have to find oil pans for 351W's that can out of vans to work in a Jeep. Also those old "4x4" pans used to be worth alot of money. There are all kinds of different pans. Lay a piece of plastic under the drain and funnel in your drain pan. Thats what I do on my 79. I split a two leter coke bottle and catch the oil with it. Later

The 4x4 was a rear sump pan not a double sump pan. The 4x4 pan did have a slight squared off section in front to clear the pump.
The 4x4 pan has a dipstick hole in the side into the rear sump. The 4x2 pan does not have a dipstick hole. The dipstick on a 4x2 goes thru the block in front into the front sump.
Even the rear drain on a 4x2 pan drains on the crossmember. I used a piece of 2" PVC pipe cut to fit under the pan. When I had the pan off for other work I modified it for a front plug. Oil changes were then a lot cleaner and easier.
