I’m not sure I understand your verification method though. You can never, and I mean never use a fuel gauge as your guide. Especially one of our Old Ford gauges!

But it sounds like you were using the “fill the tank, and then refill it and check the number of miles driven” method. Correct?
You’re not using the fuel gauge as your check, but only as proof that your numbers are accurate. Also, correct?
Yes. Driving, filling up, and calculating based on the actual distance driven and the gallons put in

So after letting my engine warm up, unplugging the vacuum advance from the distributor and plugging it off, and putting a timing light on, my engine was at almost 20 degrees of timing. I dialed it back to 12 and it seems to idle better. It smells less rich when running. My tach used to jerk up and down +/- about 200 rpm before and it no longer does that

Good results so far. Is the vacuum hooked up to ported, or full vacuum? Did you check total advance and get a general idea of the curve as you were revving up the engine?

Just got back from the store with a vacuum gauge. Turns out the port I’ve had the distributor connected to this whole time is ported vacuum. I assumed because it was on the baseplate it would be manifold vacuum but on my Holley one is ported and one is vacuum. So I hooked the gauge to the manifold and started the truck up. 14 inches of vacuum steady. After adjusting the carb I was able to get up to 16 inches which is dead on with what is listed on Edelbrock’s website for my specific cam. Made sure to hook the distributor up to the manifold vacuum port this time. Engine seems a lot happier now

Typically you want to run ported vacuum on your advance.

Probably the reason it likes manifold vacuum is because your timing is retarde and it likes the advance.

you need to get a dial back and unhook the vacuum advance and see what your mechanical is all in at 2800. if it's not in the mid to low 30's advance the distributor until it is. then check your initial. hook the vacuum up and see how it runs.

Retarded timing cause poor performance, poor economy and high EGT's.
