Differential DANA44
Differential DANA44
I searched on the website but I did not find any particular information, on my F100 223 ci from 1961 I have a DANA 44 differential at the rear (it is clearly noted 44 at the bottom right seen from behind on the crankcase with an A in a circle)
Do you know what its particularities are ?
I ask a lot of questions but the perfect knowledge of my truck will allow me to better understand the work and I obviously need the experts that you are, and I thank you for always answering me!

The Dana 44 rear end was available as an option. Where the standard 9" rear end was non-limited slip the Dana 44.1 would have likely been a limited slip. They are a fine differential but most of the original Ford replacement parts have been obsolete for years here in the U.S. other than bearings and races. Hopefully it doesn't need much. If it's original, then your warranty plate should reflect that. Did you find your warranty plate? Typically attached to the inside of the glove box door in 1961. Post a picture of it and I can help decode it if you would like. It should also tell more of the tale.
I have the impression that this website provided the parts right? maybe it's more complicated than it looks..DANA PARTS But it's very expensive...
There may not be a thing wrong with the rear axle. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Just jack up both rear wheels get under there and pull the cover off and see what it looks like. If it was military, it probably got better Maintenace than a civilian truck would have gotten. A decently maintained rear end should last 2 or 300 thousand miles.
You can easily check to see if it is a limited slip and if it's working while it is jacked up by putting it in gear and turning one wheel. If it is limited slip, you should not be able to turn the wheel if it is open when you turn one wheel the other wheel will turn the opposite direction.
If it is limited slip and it looks good don't forget to put some friction modifier in with the gear oil otherwise it might chatter.

It doesn't make any noise and seems to be in good condition so I'm definitely not going to touch 😉 it! I might change the crankcase gasket as there seems to be a small leak. Okay, I'll try that once the driveshaft is installed.
If not compared to the "standard" differential, what difference does it make?
I think you mean you already explained it above? I'm sorry but the translation into French is not always good and I don't always understand the explanations that are too technical for the translator... 🤔
