I posted this over on the expedition forum but not much traction there,
over the years ive seen interest in 6.8 swaps. i used to own an excursion with a 6.8 and i dont know if i was just lucky but i had no issues with that engine and just loved it. great sound, so smooth. anyway. i came across a wrecked 2015 former ambulance with a working, running 6.8 and drivetrain. Would the complete and running donor make a swap fairly painless into a 2005 Expy? I have heard that engine mounts are pretty much the same but have also heard horror stories of splcing wiring, etc. However, if i have the complete harness, etc, what all would i have to worry about?
Ive been up in the air with the engine for my 2005 and while i slowly work on getting it started again, im weighing my options. looking for a nice long term vehicle.

This won’t be anywhere close to a “painless” swap.
You still have to splice. You’re merging two totally different platforms together. Engine harness plugs will be different than those at the firewall on the Expy. Splice time!
I believe it was at F150Online where someone did a 2007 F150 swap to a v10. Wasn’t even close to a straight drop in. I don’t believe cruise control ever worked after the swap. ‘07s use DBW throttle , so it wasn’t a matter of hiking up the cruise control cable. Bunch of other nagging issues, too. The OP’s summary was “Never again.” if I recall correctly.

Then don’t do this swap. You won’t pass emissions in Austin, either, assuming you want a daily driver.
*Don’t take this as discouragement necessarily-many folks do. Take this as more of hurdles you will have to clear.
so what im hearing is, good to go right? no, im kidding. this was something i knew might not work but maybe needed someone to talk me out of it. I appreciate your sage advice.
Well OBD2 testing is easy without codes in TX. Anything pre ODB2 is smog exempt now and only requires a safety.
Definitely sounds like an interesting swap. I have seen a few 32V 5.4s swapped into the earlier Expeditions as it is similar to the F150 up there...and Lincoln did the Blackwood and Navigator.
Yeah I still have a year on smog I think. This is a 2005. The thing I thought might help is the donor is complete with cab. So I guess if I didn’t value my time I could transfer pretty much everything over. Dash, steering, engine, transmission, brain. But i guess then the truck would scan as a 2015 something or other.
Most folks in my area really could not care what is under the hood, as long as there are no smog codes. They are supposed to do a visual for components, but I cannot recall the last time an inspector actually did that aside from horn function, wipers, tires, and brakes aka safety portion
Hell, I swapped a 6.0 LQ9 into my Suburban which had the 5.3 LM7 stock. Passes smog fine and no one cares, heck I do not even bring it up!
