To remove the most rearward you have to possibly remove the forward panel. Here are pics of the NOS quarter trims that I replaced, you can get an idea of what overlaps what. I don't see any pics of them removed completely.

Thanks much for this. At least this forced me to remove the spare tire so that I can equip it with a spare matching the other tires.

if the spare is the same diameter, what does it matter?
my spare is a All Terrain piece of crap,
the 4 on the ground are Michelin Defender LTS street tires.
same size, not going to spend $340 just to let a spare rot in the back.

The spare was not the same diameter The vehicle has 305/70/16 on it now. Now I can replace the spare with one of the old 305/70/16s. No rotting in the back. Actually to the contrary.
It was not hard to replace those panels from what I recall, I had a harder time finding the grey ones in the boneyards.
Just a couple screws and the overhead seat belt anchor point, mostly plastic clips held it in place if I remember right.
Guy I got my 2001 from had pulled the spare and sawzalled through the plastic panel to bolt a toolbox to the steel of the inner quarter. Was not difficult to put it back to the stock setup for me. Finding one at a boneyard took me about 3 months.
