Have a 2011 F250 6.2 CC 4X4 .......Always used 5W-20 but I have noticed its getting harder too find , now I see a lot of 0W-20 on the store shelves ! Question is this one ok to use in the older 6.2 motors? Thanks
If you were to move off 5w20, the common switch is to the 5w30, which is the spec on my 2019. Ow20 would too thin in my opinion. This topic has come up in the past, because Ford switched the 6.2 spec to 5w30 at some point.
I changed to 5W-30 a few years ago and the only thing I've noticed is the occasional ticking on start up is gone. But if I was in really cold weather I would consider 0-20 just for the winter then 5-30 for the warmer weather.
I tried 0w-20 and started hearing the timing chain. It's too light to pump up the tensioners, so I'm told. I went back to 5w-20 and the noise went away. If 5w20 become nonexistent, I'll go to 10w-20 or 30. I was about to replace all the chain gear, and all it was, was the oil.
Mine uses PP HM 5W30, sounds great. 4-5K OCI. FL-820S filter. Ford backspeced these engines to 5W30 from 5W20.
5W30 should be available anywhere. 20 may get a bit more mileage, I guess.
5W20 is hard to find? There are millions of vehicles on the road that use 5W-20 and 5W-30. In the last 4 years 0W-XX is the new oil spec. It is meant to get as much MPGs from the engine as possible due to CAFE standards. back to the 6.2. 5W-20 was in the early models. Revised to 5W-30 in the later engines. My 2016 has 5W-30 spec for Engine oil. Use that and don't worry. If you are concerned about gas mileage on an 8,000 pound truck, simply put you bought the wrong vehicle.
