I would say start at about 10 or 12* BTDC and if you dont get any pinging or hot restart kick back I would say you are good as long as the mechancial & vacuum advance works.
Then set idle speed float level and mixture and if still boging then you will need to look at the carb.
As I said I had to go with a 50cc pump and larger squirter.
If you go just larger squirter the 30cc pump ran out of shot to soon or it did for me.

Yes, check your vacuum advance system and —> also try running manifold vacuum advance instead of ported. Running manifold vac advance you’ll probably need to dial back the idle speed a bit, but fwiw my 460 comes off the line much better with manifold advance. Yes that means I’m 12* base + 15* vac advance = 27* combined advance at idle. Otherwise once the throttle blades open, ported or manifold are pretty much the same, except I think I get more advance and better mileage cruising down the freeway with manifold advance. On your 302 your mileage may vary.
don't really have much to go on as far as timing numbers but i adjusted jt a bit and got the results i was looking for .
As long as you dont have any pinging / spark knock and no kick back on hot start you should be ok.
It would have been nice to know what it was at and where you ended up at but maybe another day

now this is all going off other peoples word,
but i have the build specs for the motor from the previous owner. accordinf to them, they tuned the carb necessarily to the motor
Id that with the vacuum line removed and plugged?
On my 300 six if I bump it up to 16* I get pinging and even at 14* so have it at 12* and ever once in a while get a little pinging.

That is good but as the weather changes carbs need "tuning" that is one reason EFI has come to be as it adjusts its self.
If it is runing good then leave it as is and enjoy.

A truck or car dose not know what year it was made or with what motor / transmission / rear end.
It is up to us to match up what we know works best together and then fine tune it.
To go a little deeper a motor is a motor be it a straight 4, 6 or 8 yes 8, or a flat 4 or 6 or a v 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12.
They all work the same just with more or less pistons is all.

no i agree. im just saying, it's a 20 year old rebuild, the wrong transmission i believe,
someone said i should see results al across the board. i do, but given that it's a 20 year old motor, wrong transmission, im hapoy w the results i got. im not expecting a miracle
