My 16yr old Boy and I rebuilt our 94 over the summer. I gave it to him and its his daily driver. Vegas parking lots can get nutty and not 4 Door Long Bed friendly. I was looking for some recommendations on back up cams. I would appreciate any advice, Thanks!
Best option that is easily reversible and no damage would be one that uses its own screen stuck to the dash. Trucks are really easy to do, especially these old ones. I would recommend getting hard wired camera over a wireless system as they don't work very good.
I put a camera in when I did the dual din install from obs Interiors. It's armored and works great, I have set so I can see it at anytime too, it takes p a small corner of the screen.
What do you think of the double din kit? I looked at this and was concerned about the lose of structure?
I was a bit wirried about chopping out the middle bar too, but the dash doesn't seem any less stable then stock. There's a metal factory brace right there above the radio opening going to the firewall to help keep everything in place too. I did all the cutting with a dremel..
I had originally also thought about going eith a "floating monitor" style radio. I was concerned about the dash bunpout where the gauges are amd the fact my trucks a manual, figured I'd end up punching the monitor going into third or so. Plus it'd partially obscure the hvac I think.
Looking back, that floating monitor option should work great as long as it clears the dash bump out. How often are you really fiddling with the hvac controls anyway.
When I got mine I got the in mirror monitor too. Unfortunately I have to put my reading glasses on to see it. That may not matter for a 16YO.
If I were to do it again I would get one with a 5" or so screen and mount it on the left corner of the dash or on the trans tunnel in front of the shifter against the firewall. Good and bad for either choice.
Mine's wireless and it works fine. It will occasionally pixelate, but only for a second. It also picks up peoples security cameras once in a while driving down the road. The camera is above the license plate and it's freakin' awesome for hooking up a trailer by yourself.
