Last august I purchased a 2001 4X4 7.3L powerstroke excursion.
I noticed the AC on a very warm day,it was difficult to keep cool.
I live in Arizona so the temps can reach 115 Deg.
I wanted to see how cold the air was coming out of the vents so I bought a temp gauge and stuck it in the vent. The temp reading was 65-67 deg. I took it to the ford dealer, they tested it said no problem.
I'm not an expert on ac
but to my knowledge it should be around 35 to 45 inside the vent depending on outside air. but here in MN it doesn't get that hot up to mid 90's on our hottest days.
It has always been my understanding that if the interior of the car/van/truck is 30 to 40 below outside temp your doing good.
I worked on A/C units, auto/home/commercial, for a few years, and the temps you are getting from the vents is what it is suppose to be. Same as for your home, if you ever wonder if your system is working properly, test the temps from the vents. Look for around 65-68 degrees. Hope this helps.
I think my air is not as cool as it should be. We have not had enough really hot weather to stress the system but that will soon change. I might put some gauges on it and see if the pressure in the system is where it should be.
Check your condenser coil up front it may be dirty. If there is enough dirt on the coils there will not be enough heat transfer. Not enough heat transfer the refrigerant won't sub-cool enough. Not enough sub-cooling means it has a reduced capicity to absorb heat in the evaporator. End result is a warmer discharge temperture.
Next check the amp. draw on the compressor to see if it's in the operating range, that info should be on the compressor ie; fla, full load amps.
Last put a gauge set on the system and check the temperature and pressure. Your will need a p/t chart to see if everything is OK. Your system should have R-134a refrigerant in it, and you can buy that refrigerant at any local auto store.
