Leaking ebpv actuator, KC Stock Plus Turbo opinions?

The ebpv actuator rod is leaking a steady amount of oil on my 97 work truck. I am keeping stock injectors for the foreseeable future on this truck. It tows around 8-10k daily, Most weight towed is around 15k, not very often. Empty the trailer weighs 5k. It does fine for what I use it for.

The current turbo setup is an older tp38 stocker mated with a banks Quick Spool housing(not installed by me). With the turbo and pedestal off I’m replacing with ebpv delete pedestal and buying a blank housing to remove the butterfly valve.

Truck has 3.55 gears, and is currently on 265 75 16 tires, moving to 285 75 16 soon

Auto tranny, motorcraft reman 7.3 with 40k on it.

Not planning injectors anytime soon, possibly later on though when these stock ones give out.

Since the turbo likely has a lot of miles on it I want to replace it with one of the KC stock plus turbos while it’s apart to repair the oil leak. I am debating the KC 300x stage one.
Riff Raff also sells a tp38 “Frankenstein” turbo that has a 1.0 housing vs the .84 sold with the Stock Plus…I’m leaning towards not going to a .84 housing, no intercooler on this truck

Any real world experience with the KC stock plus? Price difference between the 300x and stock plus is negligible.

No issues with current turbo but would rather replace it while it’s off so I don’t do it again anytime soon. Plus new parts make the job more fun.

The kc stock plus would be a great option, and a much better fit then the stage 1 for your stock injectors.

I’ve decided to go with the tp38 hybrid “Frankenstein” turbo Riff Raff sells. Looks like I can only get the KC stock plus turbo in a .84 AR and this hybrid TP 38 comes with a 1.0 AR.

This truck tows every day and does not have an intercooler so I’m thinking with the 1.0 AR I wouldn’t be producing as high EGT

Biggest injectors this truck would see in the future would be 160’s

Did you call KC? If not, I would call them and discuss your situation. They have experience with multiple setups and can point you in a solid direction. With 3.55s, you will be lower in the rpm and may benefit from the .84 unless you run on the highway at high rpm’s often.

I actually just got off with KC, from what they say the .84 housing might be OK to run.

I was under the impression that the .84 would increase my EGT and lower my mileage, possibly. KC seems to think the .84 with their stock plus turbo would suit my needs more than the TP 38 Frankenstein offered by Riff Raff.

This truck is a dedicated tow vehicle that I use for daily work and always has 5000 pound trailer attached. Sometimes there’s about 10,000 pounds of material in the trailer.

The kc stock plus will be better all around below 2500 rpms or so, more responsive and better mannered.

I ended up getting the e99 delete pedistal, TP38 Frankenstein Turbo from riff raff, and bellowed up pipes from riff raff.

This was my first turbo removal on the 7.3. With the help of a Topside Creeper, which I highly recommend for doing this job, the turbo came out in about three casual hours. I sprayed all bolts with PB a few times a day for a couple days before removing. Came out no issues. Much quicker than I had planned.

The up pipes took another two hours or so to unbolt and remove. Again much easier than anticipated! They both pretty much fell out of the collector. Huge boost leaks!

Install of this setup with the e99 pedistal and top mount turbo was very easy. New up pipes and turbo both took about 3-4 hours working in the street at 30 degrees temps. I could have this new turbo out in under an hour.

This is my work truck and boost was around 8-10psi previous. Now I can hit 23. MUCH more responsive!! Glad I got new up pipes as well. Truck sounds much better overall. I’m sure mpg went up as well.

Very happy with this turbo, glad I went this direction
