I want to upgrade or replace my stock turbo charger. Where should I start? I've heard that you can use a later model 7.3 waste gated turbo, is this true? Or should I go aftermarket, and if so which one?
Their not alot to be had for upgrading the turbo without larger injectors.. Fill out your signature so we can see what mods you have done to your truck!!
stock turbo is good for a 430 hp or well thats what i made with it on diesel only, no n2o or pane and bdp stage 2 injectors. Egt's were still very controllable, but i just wanted bigger so thats why i upgraded. If your going with large injectors i would recommend the hypermax h2e as it works very well with stage 2's and stage 3's. The stock superduty turbo is actually a step down for us so dont swap over to it, i know a guy that did that and he lost about 40hp. If you upgraded to an h2e with stock inejctors you would hate yourself bc turbo would never spool, your truck would have less power.
All I have done so far is a K&N FIPK and 3" turbo back exhaust. I borrowed a superchips programmer, and ran it until my torque converter went out.(by the way the guy at the tranny shop said it was the programmers fault that the tranny went out again..HMM..) I am in the process of putting an intercooler on, and I'm looking for a good chip, progammer,or module.(Any advice)
I agree with Jake. I got a 1.0 exhaust housing and it helps spool quicker. Also Tony Wildman is the Man when it comes to programming(chips) on our trucks.
While you can't rule it out... your tranny may have been on its last leg before you installed the chip and it finished it off. Most don't have trouble with stock trannys with just a chip. Their are minor upgrades that can help out. Hopefully someone with auto experience will point them out........
