Did anyone see 2 Guys Garage this past weekend? They replaced the turbo, intercooler and pipes on a 7.3. They used parts from ATS. During the program they said the EBPV is known to melt so their kit deletes it and replaces the 'weak' aluminum pedestal with a 'much stronger' steel unit. Then they said their turbo spins clockwise which is much better than the stock counter clockwise turbo. My question is "why?". Why does it make any difference which way the turbo spins?
Has anyone melted an EBPV before? I haven't heard of that before either.
With that new turbo, won't they need bigger injectors? Seems like the show was just a 30 minute commercial for ATS to me. They didn't even start the truck and put it on a dyno or anything. Maybe that will be another episode?
I found the episode and watched the video. Just to comment on the questions brought up:
Clockwise vs counter-clockwise - Basically they weren't talking about a specific performance difference between turbos spinning clockwise vs counter. What was mentioned is that a vast majority of the turbo market uses turbos that spin clockwise. Many of these turbos use the same mounts, frames, oil feeds, etc, so upgrading from one to another can in some cases be easier since there are a few more options.
Melting EBPV - yeah, that was dumb of them to mention that. Good luck melting that piece.
Aluminum vs cast iron pedestal - Really it doesn't make much of a difference. The stock aluminum pedestal is plenty strong for the stock turbo, or even for use with the 38R turbo (a performance upgraded turbo that bolts to the stock Ford PSD pedestal). Basically that was just a marketing ploy on that video.
LOL, I also find it funny that it was mentioned that a PSD is at 1600 degrees EGT's when pulling a trailer.

Thanks for the clarification. Maybe I mis-understood what they were trying to say. To me it came across as clockwise turbos are better for some reason (which was not clear to me).
Did you catch the part where they stated the plastic tanks on the stock IC would blow off the core? How much boost do you need to do that? My IC looks like it's all aluminum, I guess they changed to plastic tanks on later years?
The ATS parts looked pretty though....and expensive. Wouldn't the engine need bigger injectors or will stock sticks shoot enough fuel to satisfy the air from that new setup?
You guys don't actually take a thing you hear on those shows seriously, do you?
They are reading a script that the producers dictate, and the name of the game is money and marketing. You don't think a product is mentioned that isn't paid for by the manufacturer, do you?
I'm an honest guy, and I have a bridge to sell......

And I own the ocean front property on the other side of said bridge. Pop and I will make a killer package deal for someone if they are interested.

Yeah, I am a bit gullible. I still laugh at myself because I remember way back to a day shortly after I bought my truck. The water in fuel light came on. The owner's manual said to drain the water by turning that yellow lever behind the fuel/water separator. I turned the lever thinking that only water would come out. Boy was I surprised.

Oh, there's more? Looks like they only have a segment of it online, rather than the entire episode.
As for the intercoolers with plastic tanks, it takes more than double the boost of what a stock 7.3L makes before you're in danger. Of course, by the time you start getting to that point, the stock intercooler is entirely too small and isn't doing enough for you anyway.

Yes. Simply bolting on a turbo doesn't give you extra power. It's still the same amount of fuel being delivered, and at the most only a slight bit of extra airflow.
It will not be offered later, so you better get it while you can....

sweet!!! should I post my Credit card info, bank account statement, ssn and paypal password so we can get the ball rolling...
man, i have always wanted a bridge.........actually I do need a bridge!! anyone know where I can find an old railroad flat car so I don't have to use my inlaw's bridge to get to my house?
I gotta confer with Chase. We're in this together, and it's a package deal.
We'll get back to you............
Just for the sake of friendship and brotherhood, however, we'd sorta' like to sell these items OUTSIDE of FTE's fraternity, if you know what I mean.

Good thinking. Maybe ATS will sponsor the sale. I can see the ad now..."With ATS turbo systems, you will have the power to tow this bridge home". I bet someone out there will get 25mpg while doing it too.
I believe the CW spinning turbo shows performance gains in the southern hemisphere...
That's funny because I was actually waiting for a punchline along those lines when I heard them say it. I was thinking the Aussie boys have all the luck.
