I have the original alternator and pulley (I think) on a 96 F260 with the 5.8. It had A/C originally.
The alt is held on with a nut that seems to have a female allen 6-sided hole, and testing with my allen wrenches suggests it is 3/8, with a little wiggle leftover. But 10mm was too big, and I don't have a 9mm in the set for some reason (the set jumps from 10 to 8. Weird!)
Someone told me I need a special tool to pull the alternator pulley. I was thinking I could just buy a 3/8" hex bit for a 1/2" ratchet/driver, and then attach it to my breaker bar. Then I'd take off the fan shroud, keep the belt on, give it a good twist, and voila!
Am I correct, or do I need to buy/do something else?
I have never held the shaft when removing the nut. Just blast the nut off with an impact gun. When you install it, you do not need the million foot pounds of torque that some guns have.

How do you fit an impact gun in just a few inches of space?
Also, do you know the correct socket to pull the alternator pulley?
I have removed and reinstalled the pulley on an alternator without an impact wrench. Get the correct size socket and hold it with a pair of vise grips because you can't use a socket wrench and stick the allen wrench through hole in the socket. You may need a small adjustable wrench to hold the allen wrench also. Just an idea for you
15/16” if stock. Could have been changed. Your alternator has probably been changed out at some point in the past, so who knows.
The allen key is to hold the shaft while you remove/install the nut holding the pulley on.
I always use an impact. If not enough room, pull it out and do it on the bench if you wish.
Without a picture, I have no idea what you are up against. These trucks have been in service for a long time, many things have been changed, modified, repaired, rigged, there is no way to know.
Start posting up pics. It is much easier for people to help you. And the reason you are doing the work, it does matter to the advice given. As previously posted, we are simply helping each other out - you need to help the other members with pics and an explanation of what the issue is, what you are doing, and what the goal is. No one is trying to be obnoxious - only help.
Without the alternator off the truck and a wacky packy
You will never get the pulley back on there tight enough for the alternator to work (and not just have the pulley spin)
So, alternator off and a 15/16 6 point socket on your impact gun (wacky packy)

Thank you. I was really hoping not to have to remove the alt but if that's the only way to do it, then I guess I have my answer. Thank you.
