OK, I have searched for a while and I can't find an answer.....probally because it a stupid question. I have a 1992 f-150 4.9 with an alternator going bad. I have a new one with out a pulley. After I remove the nut, do I need a puller to get the pulley off or does it come off fairly easy?
I have replaced the current one three times with autozone junk, and I am getting tired of it. They always came with pulleys. Is is under the "lifetime gurantee". Like tommy boy says "it is a fully guranteed piece if s@#t".I bought this one from napa without a pulley. oddly enough, they don't sell just the pulley. I might put this one in the "it only happens to me" file
I spent a long time with a strap wrench and every tool I could think of trying to get a pulley off. Gave up and went to an alternator rebuild shop. Ask the guy how do you take off this damn thing. He said like this, and grabbed the pulley with a leather glove on and hit it with an impact wrench. Then he reversed it and put it right back on. Took about 45 seconds. Gee did I feel stupid.
napa does not sell their alternators with pulleys because the unit fits allot of different vehicles, and not all use the same pulley. there is a pulley puller, but most of time, i just use a hammer to pop the shaft. its not like i am going to hurt anything, the alternator is bad anyway.
Geez, what Napa are you guys going to? I have bought two alternators within the past year for Ford trucks, the last one no more than two months ago, and they both came with pulleys already on them.
