Hey folks,
This is a 2012 F150XL. I'm installing a back up camera. Is this an acceptable ground? This is on the driver side rear under the truck near the tail light. The green wire looks like it is going up into the tail light assembly.
Google tells me this is a backup alarm. Its disconnected and/or not working. can I just remove it and use this location as my chassis ground for the camera?
Thanks
If I remember correctly, there is an existing ground behind the rear bumper, near the spare tire, where the trailer harness attaches. Beyond that, any accessible point on the frame will work, just clean off the paint/grime, and use a good stainless screw, and I use a internal or external tooth washer, to bite into the metal.
any/all solid metal frame surface will work, that's why it's called chassis ground.
an alarm needs a power inlet and ground to work.. If there is only ONE WIRE, then it is coming from the REVERSE LIGHT wire on the tail light... and the "alarm box" is ground to the frame with those two bolts..
I've looked up this device and it is a backup alarm for sure. it is not working as I'm not hearing anything in reverse. I looked up the wiring diagram and agree that the one wire I see appears to go to the reverse light.
I'll just remove it as its not needed and steal the ground for my camera. I understand that I could just use that power from the reverse wire to power the camera, but I also had a reverse camera power lead coming from the head unit, so I'll use that instead.
so the camera will be powered from the head unit. and ground will come from the back of the back of the truck when I remove the old back up alarm.
