Sooner or later the 5.4 in my '99 250 SD 4x4 is going to need to be changed (currently pushing 200,000) so I bought a 5.4 from a 2002 and was thinking of adding either a turbo or supercharger (need more towing power). Can anybody tell me what I need to be aware of in making a change like this? Differences in the engines / electronics? Anything I need to change in the electronics just for the engine? What about if SC or Turbo is added?
Never messed with a change like this, done plenty of engine swaps on "old style" engines (no fancy electronics!)
The engine *should* bolt right in. I could be wrong. As for the turbo and supercharger, the maker of the kit should send you a chip that you plug into the PCM.
Just curious why slap a 2002 model engine into your 99 F250? Does it have more torque and horses or better modifications? I too will be looking to purchase an engine for my 99 Expy. Thanks for any input

Dan

Supposedly the newer engines have a few more HP but the main reason for the 02 motor was the price. I bought the long block with less than 20,000 miles from a wreck (no damage to front end) for a good price. My current one runs just fine even though it is pushing 200k. (I swear by synthetic oils now - last one was running strong when I traded it with 240k and our Expy with 148k still runs like a champ). This truck is not "babied" by any means, pulls trailers (race car and horse), make about 10 trips a year between the flat lands on Florida to the mountains of NC and all the normal abusive daily driving. I do run a Diablo sport chip, K&N filter (just the filter), 315:75's and a flow master muffler. It isn't a rocket off the line but it isn't a slouch either. It is a great truck and I plan on keeping it a while longer. Couldn't pass up the deal on the engine and thought I might do a few mods to it before undertaking the change.
