Hello everyone. Possibly stupid question but I’m stumped. The #8 plug blew out on my ‘97 5.4 2v (they had been changed before, it looks to me like they weren’t tightened right and it backed out), so I went out and got a chaser and a new plug and coil, cleaned it all up and chased it, but the plug still wont thread in. I can twist the chaser in with my fingers no problem, all the way down to the bottom and back. But when I twist a plug in there, it acts like it’s cross threading as soon as it gets any sort of bite. I’ve tried multiple plugs and checked the threads and it all checks out, they just wont start. I have a thread repair kit with the sleeves, but ideally I don’t want to go that route unless I have no other option. Can anyone give me any input? I’m completely stumped.
Ok, couple of thoughts.
Did you use the correct chaser, matched to the new plug?
Second to last resort. It'll cost you a plug. Groove down or file the threads of new plug to resemble a chaser/tap and use that to clean the threads before trying the new plug.
Be aware your threads may already be damaged beyond chasing.
Good luck.
Seconding newfordy. If the chaser and the plug have the same thread design then the plug should go in. You didn't say what exactly "checked the threads means".
You might very carefully try the chaser in a known good hole. If it binds that's a clue.
Thank you guys for the input. I should have been more specific with how I worded it. I took the spark plug(s) and held them to the tap where the threads would mesh and they seemed to mesh just fine. When I get home today I’ll try taking another plug out and seeing if I can twist the tap in by hand.
You had better plan on a thread repair sleeve for that plug
If it blew out before and you have / had to chase the threads to get another plug installed, it will damn sure blow out again IMO
Fix it right now with the thread sleeve
I use the NAPA ones with success

Agree with this 110% ^^ Once a plug pops, it usually takes most of the little bit of threads it has with it. 2 ways to fix, replace the head or use the thread sleeve.
