Decided to start replacing ball joints, ujoints, and wheel bearings on my 05 F250 today.
I've never done an 05+ before, after removing the 3 retaining torx screws I pried on the cap to remove it.
I wound up breaking the cap off but leaving the remainder of the hub in the knuckle.
Pulling the unit bearing with the axle shaft will not affect the lockout at all. Theres a snap ring on the axle shaft behind the lockout that holds the axle shaft in place. I’ve had good luck with two pliers, pulling on them plastic tabs to get them out. Spray lube/penetrating oil will also help. Also when pulling on the lockout hub, try to wiggle the yokes of the axle shaft up and down.

Thanks, I read about manipulating the yokes in the factory service info.
I was trying to pull on the edges of the tabs, I think I'll give it a go prying the tabs out and getting a better grip on them. I better go blast it with some PB.....
I don't see how locked vs unlocked makes a difference, but I'm pretty sure they were unlocked.
I don't think those tabs rotate, they are just for holding the cap in position.
Got it out. I tried prying on the diaphragm retaining ring, that just bent up and came off. Once the diaphragm was out of the way I could get ahold of something a little more substantial.
I think it was just sticking from being gummed up with old grease and mud.
I was a little more careful with the other side and got it off in one piece.
I have a low mile parts truck, I'll steal the hubs of that when this goes back together.
I was just going to reply that locked and unlocked doesn’t matter in this case. But refreshed the page. Lol I have ones that I welded together after breaking them so they are like a drive slug. Worst part is the plastic breaking when pulling too hard. Can snap the cap back on easily so thats not a big deal.
My bad - for some reason, I was thinking the hubs locked the wheel to the axle a different way that would end up causing resistance when the hubs were removed without unlocking. Learn something new every day 😉
Before you re-install the lockout hubs, use lubriplate or white engine assembly grease on the splines. Wheel bearing grease is WAY to thick and you will have to use a 24" pipe wrench to turn the dial (LOL). B.
