429/460 build

hello all,
i'm in the middle of building a 460 for a 69' ranchero. I picked up what i thought and was told was a std. 460. dissasembled it and ran it over to my local engine builder. he does the machining i do the assembly. turns out the 460 is not a 460 but a 429CJ. so i went with a 460 crank to get longer stroke and flat top speedpro pistons to raise compression to 10.5:1. the motor had stock dished 460 pistons for some odd reason. the heads were worked over with some larger Manely valves and completed with Comp springs and solid cam and the appropriate roller rockers.

now on to the oddity to me atl least. every ford part# book i have come accross says the D1VE-AB block is a garden variety 429/460 and the D0VE-C heads are std 429/460 also, however the heads have individual adjustable rocker studs and the larger ports of the CJ/SCJ as measured. is there another number series used to specify the CJ/SCJ from the std 429/460? I have a serial number stamped into the back of the block but i'm not sure what those numbers reference. any help would be greatly appreciated. and is it possible to get into the 500hp range with this motor? the rods are factory D0oo-e. and i went with a Port-O-Sonic manifold. carb I'm still not sure, it's between the 4150 930cfm and the dominator series.

Most CJs came with 2-bolt mains (some 4-bolt, but few and far between), all SCJs with 4-bolt mains. DOVE and DIVE blocks were used as 2 and 4-bolt blocks for the CJ/SCJ series depending on the two engineering numbers after the basichead casting numbers. DOVE-A and DIVE-AA both had extra metal cast into the main bearing webs for the factory option of machining for 4-boltmains.

The only CJ/SCJ head casting number is DOOE-R. It has 2.25"I and 1.74"E valves. Both CJ/SCJ came with 5/16" pushrod guide plates and hardened pushrods. Only the SCJ came with an ajustable vave train. CJ and DOVE heads have individual shouldered rocker arm studs with rail type rocker arms where the rocker arm nut is torqued down to a factory spec.

It will take a serious cam to get into the 500hp range. If you have DOVE heads, they'll require extensive porting. DOOE-R heads will require only cleanup. Both will require roller rocker arms, which you have, which means you have 3/8" guidelates and hardened pushrods as the 5/16" pushrods are prone to bending at higher RPMs. Full tube headers will also be required to achieve 500hp. The Port-A-Sonic is a very old design and I've forgotten the capabilities. 930cfm may be too much carb for 500hp, and will be if you're running DOVE heads that haven't been hogged out, not just larger valves. 10.5 c/r is marginal for 500hp, depending on your cam.
