When I did my 81 F100 hood I was by myself and thought how the he11 am I going to do this
My truck ran and moved and my garage has open rafters.
I took some home depot straps and hung the hood by then over the rafters.
I then drove the truck up under the hood and bolted the hood to the hinges.
I dont know how I would use the engine hoist to do what I did?
I did use it to remove and install the nose on the truck, again by myself.
I also used the hoist to remove the parts truck cab, roll over, from the frame and the bed that I cut up so I could use the floor for my flare side to replace the wood flooring.

you can do it. I installed the whole flip front of my truck with my engine hoist and the judicial use of ratchet straps and towels and blankets and masking tape... You just gotta be creative in your rigging
Make sure you have the overhead clearance for the hoist to raise the boom. Not a great picture but you can get an idea.
After covering the front clip with heavy blankets,
To prep, I installed the hood hinge brackets, part #3 on the diagram, to the hood. I then separated the 2 hood hinge parts by removing the pin between them part #1 on the diagram, and bolted the 2 parts of each hood hinge to the hood and firewall.
attached the hood hinge brackets. You can pull the hood forward, away from the cowl, and get the body bolts in.
Next I propped the hood up and mated to 2 parts of the hood hinge together with the pin and cotter pin, one side at a time.
A bit of adjustment and it’s all done. Took maybe an hour.
As a side note I hate how that diagram shows the wrong part #4 hood bolts for a 48-50 Truck.
The correct ones have no flange. They are just a 1/4 fine thread bolt with a hole for safety wire.
Mine is a 55, but I put hooks in the joists in the ceiling and used ratchet straps.
I notice I have a block of wood at the back side. This was a few years ago, so I don't recall exactly how I got the hood on the hooks.
My guess is I moved the truck under the hood after I ratcheted the hood up from the ground. I do know I did it without any assistance.
The engine hoist might be a better option though.
Get a friend. I have done it several times with 2.
Bill, that is the way I finally done it.Got my neighbor to help, laid blankets over everything. He held hood up while I got the four bolts in(went in between hood and firewall) and tightened then I got the hinges connected with cotter keys.Turned out it was much easier than I expected.
Interesting post, I used UHaul Blankets. Then installed the rubber bumpers. Yep I had help that sucker is heavy. I had to pop my left fender out about one inch used a block of 2 by4 wood and a rubber mallet. Hope I don’t have to do that hood thing again! AJ
