I have recently started working on my dads old 1978 f150 and found an oil leak. It looks like it is coming from the transmission. I just replaced the bulbs on the dash and the oil light was on. I was wondering if the leak was the problem or if it’s oil pressure. I’m planning on doing the oil change soon but I also want to fix this leak. I’m new to working on trucks and know very little. I’ll put the pictures of where it is leaking from below. There seems to be another leak on the engine but I cannot tell where it is coming from. Just looking for some recommendations for what to do.
Yeah I was having a hard time getting pictures, it’s black and it’s coming out of the small hole there, which I was wondering if that hole was supposed to be there.
That spot is a classic leak point but not always east to diagnose. At worst, as beartracks said, it could be your rear main seal. It could just as likely be your intake manifold leaking or your oil sending unit leaking.
1. Clean it up with degreaser. I mean real clean all the way up the block.
2. Run it. Get it up to operating temp for 20 mins.
3. Part it with a box or crate paper underneath. Let’s sit overnight. Or longer.
4. Get under there and trace your leak. If it’s coming from up high, check back if your intake.
You could also spend a few minutes inspecting the rear of your intake and oil pressure sender. Is it pooling back there? If so, it’s an easy fix. If it’s dry, focus on that fly wheel inspection plate area.
