So I recently got a low milage truck 67k. Issue with low miles is no one changes the coolant it looked like espresso. No oil or anything all rust. So I replaced heater core, radiator, hoses, water pump and ran water through the the thermostat outlet and let water drain through the water pump. Filled it and it's rusty again I know I have to do a few flushes. I'd love to put a spin on filter on heater core line. Use to have one on my psd. Anyone have any ideas on a kit or what to get.
Cant help you with the coolant filter, other than suggest the same type set up as on the psd, but it’s a by pass filter, would take a long time to work, if at all. I’m sure there are lots of various set ups that will work.
What I would suggest before going that route is a chemical flush, using Thermocure or something like that to flush / treat the rust. Followed up with some distilled water flushes, and a new thermostat. I’ve never needed to use it, but read good things about it.
Get one that uses the WIX filter. Add water wetter to the coolant. And after a few fill and drains and filters you should have most of it. Have the filter on the inlet of the heater core so if you get no heat you know you're neglecting your filter.
Done this many times over the years for dirty coolant systems
drain it
fill with tap water and add in 2 litre of cocacola
drive it till it gets hot and drain
flush with water
flush with distilled
fill with 50 50 mix of choice
Evaporust will clean that stuff out like crazy. I had to on my C4.
I put a basic coolant filter base on both my 5.4s as both disgusting cooling systems. Few thousand miles cleans them up well. Make sure to use the INLET to the heater core as supply to coolant filter.
It is a waste of time using high dollar coolant, additives, etc until you do as above
I had bought these for my 2000 F250 with the 7.3L before a drunk s******d crashed into it and bent the frame. I'll be putting them into my current ride in the near future.
I can say that the Ford flush is not to drink and that is what I use
We used to have to use ph test strips to test the acidity / alkalinity before and after the flush
Ford made ph neutralizer for us to use if needed
That will lessen the rust and maybe save the freeze plugs
Leave the Coke for drinking (remember grade school)? Coke rusts nails
Also, LubeGard makes a product called Kool-It that's meant as a water additive for summer use.
It also does a great job over time at cleaning out the cooling system...
...when it's no longer pink, you flush and replace it.
t
works great on race cars that aren't allowed to use coolant.
