I removed the stock lever from my 56 and installed a motorized setup. Don't know if the 56 lever will work in the 53. You might want to consider the power vent as the OEM lever prevents you from adding any panel below the dash in case you want too. I got the motor setup from Ball's Rod & Kustom (less expensive than others I found). Their number is 574-457-2880. If you want to consider the 56 lever send me an email.

You do need the hinged brackets that the vent attaches to, but that is all. The lever arm and pivoting arm are removed. I built a bracket for the motor to mount to the existing channel brace under the dash on the 56 but any type mount for the motor should work, it just needs to be within 3-4 inches of the vent for the arm from the motor to attach. Some adjusting is required to get the vent to close tight and not bind but it only takes a few minutes. It comes with a small switch to locate wherever. Hope this makes sense.

The motor for the cowl vent is located a few inches (3-4) below the vent. In my 56 I hung it from the existing dash brace that runs from the bottom lip on the dash on an angle up to the top of the firewall near the cowl vent. Since the wiper motor on a 56 is on the outside of the firewall it was not a problem for me. I assume your wiper motor on the 51 is inside and I think that there is probably enough room. The radio might be an issue. Mine is mounted in an aftermarket panel below the dash. I tried to include a photo( but couldn't figure out how to do it) but it probably wouldn't be much help since it is kind of difficult to get a good one under the dash and I imagine there is a significant difference between the 51 and the 56. The price John Townsel paid for his motorized unit is less than the $60 (included switch) I paid at *****.
