I have a 59 F100, purchased earlier this year. Since the horn button didn’t work, I removed it from the steering wheel. Underneath, there is nothing to actuate the horn. So I’m wondering if my truck has an incorrect steering wheel! My current steering wheel, with horn button removed.
My truck is simply a patina style truck, so authenticity isn’t critical; I can put a button on the dash somewhere. I would just like to know what I have.
Secondly, is the turn signal lever supposed to be self cancelling? Mine is not. If it is, I’ll try to pull the steering wheel to see what’s behind it. If non-self cancelling is correct, I won’t mess around with pulling the wheel.
That is very helpful - thanks. Where does the Horn Button Spring go? I found a diagram in the LMC Truck catalog where it appears to go on top of the round washer-like piece with the pear shaped hole. Does that sound correct? Where does the end of the contact wire fit?
On the LMC diagram, there appears to be 2 or three other pieces between the Horn Button Spring and the Horn Button. Are there other pieces not included in this kit?
It appears all you're missing is the spring (sliced tomato-looking metal thing) and the actual wire with the fiber washer on it. I was just into mine the other day fixing my turn signal switch. That's all that's under there.
I think I’ve got the horn figured out. But still working on the turn signal.
I pulled the signal mechanism from the steering hub, and cleaned it up. It’s now back together, but I’m wondering if I’m still needing something else? I had inquired with Dennis Carpenter when ordering parts; they advised that I need a Cancelling Cam. So I ordered one. It doesn’t seem that fit anywhere, tho. It slips right around the spring, but I’d loose, and I can’t see where it does anything.
so do I really need one? If so, am I installing it wrong? Or do I have the wrong one?
the shop manual doesn’t show one in any diagrams, but it is mentioned in the troubleshooting section.
