I have 1963 f250 2wd 4 speed granny t98 and 4:58 diff .
I would really like to ask advice about changing to higher speed rear diff . With limited slip .
1. is it practical , what are my options , where to find correct parts?
I would like to keep rear axle and only change gearing .
I've changed the rear in my 61 F250 two times over the years. My original 5.11 ratio started to leak at every seal. That was all the excuse I needed to swap to a 1967 Dana with 3.73's and wider shoes and self adjusters. Later I swapped to a Dana 61 with 3.08 gears....
I have always swapped the entire rear.... Saves finding out the axels don't match the Carrier splines, or housing width.... I know the were minor changes over the years in width of housing, brake size, spline of axel, etc.
The short answer is yes it's possible, swapping an entire rear may be faster and cheaper if you're paying someone else for setup and installing.
Tbounds, I'm not familiar with the early 250's. Do you have a dana 60? 60's have a split in the carriers, yours is for the deeper gear ratios, so you may need a new carrier to go to a highway gear. My 65 has 410's and a limited slip, A guy in town is charging me 400-500 bucks to rebuild it with 354's and my parts. Cheers
Both of my Dana 60's were craigslist purchases. $150 ea... When they are already out and for sale, it's easy to unbolt the rear cover, look at the oil for shavings, chipped teeth, rust if stored too long.... Besides I'd never use the old lube, and install new brakes before I used it. If the seller had said No, you can't pop the cover...I wouldn't have bought...
Another thing to do is find a local shop that does rear end work and talk to them. I'm looking to do a gear swap on my '64 that has 4.56 gears.
I believe the carrier split is between 4.10 and 4.56. Last time I checked it was about $1500 for the shop to do it.
I agree with swapping the whole thing. Mine's a '65 and I don't know the difference from yours. I got a 3.73 to replace the 4.56 I had. It came out of a '81 SRW F350, but all of them are the same pretty much through the 70's and 80's, probably later. I had to relocate spring perches and shock mounts and get a different u-joint, but man is it nice and the brakes are enormous. it was $100 at least 10 years ago. Availability of parts is a bonus.
