I have a 1988 F150XLT lariat. It's burned through 5 starters. I just put a new one in yesterday. And it stopped working again today. The starter works for a little bit. And then it will just spin in the mechanism. It's got a brand new solenoid and It's got a brand new alternator can anybody help me out?
Is your truck standard or automatic?
Are the fender mounted starter relays (solenoids) failing?
On my truck, the fender mounted starter relays kept welding themselves closed, causing the starter to run continuously. After several relays, and a couple of starters, I discovered that my problem was firewall flex, so the clutch interlock switch wasn't closing all the way, and wasn't making a good electrical connection. I shimmed the clutch interlock switch and the problem resolved.
It's possible that a bad connection at the fender mounted starter relay, a poor ground connection between the base of the relay and the fender, poor connections at the clutch interlock safety switch or neutral safety switch, could contribute to starter relay failure.
I bet it's those lifetime warranty starters. Yes, they have lifetime warranties but you better have the tools with you to replace them because you will be replacing those starters for a lifetime.
