Pull the pan back off and see if the filter is laying in the pan. It's a very common problem when removing the old filter, the old o-ring gets stuck in the valve body and when you put the new filter in with new o-ring, it doesn't seat properly which allows it to fall back out. This creates a loss of pressure due to the pump sucking air instead of fluid.

You'll need some sort of pick tool to reach in and grab that old o-ring out so you can seat the new filter in place (be careful not to gouge the housing). Also check to make sure the grommet hasn't fallen out of the throttle pressure linkage at the throttle body, another common problem that can burn up the transmission.

Did you use the filling procedure? Or just dump it all in at once? The fluid that is?

The filter has 3 bolts holding it up.also checked the ring that you mentioned so I was wondering if it could be the shifting solenoid

I must be thinking about the 4r70w on that type filter. Ok make sure you put the gasket in between the filter and valve body, and the throttle valve cable/linkage grommet hasn't broken apart allowing it to disconnect from the linkage at both ends.

I I actually didn't know that that was a thing I thought you just pull it in and then keep checking make sure you didn't overfill it

Stressed over this aod transmission

My 1985 xlt Lariat has 5.0 efi still can't get it to come out of 1st when I test drove it today when I shot rpm up you can hear it trying to come out of first.but doesn't so I parked it dropped the pan. Everything looks good. Now my throttle cable the plastic that the spring cover is broken could that be the cause .it shifted fine before I replaced filter and fluid.

There is a throttle cable and the shift attenuator actuator cable. Or throttle kick down cable. If the kick down cable isn't working. It won't shift properly at all. It's next to the throttle cable. It's crucial you don't break it.
