How would you all clean the inside cover of my differential? Also, I've heard of putting a magnet on the inside cover to catch any loose metal. Is that legit? Thanks for any help!
I'm wondering if I couldn't sand it down to get it off, but would I have to shoot a primer on it to keep it from rusting again? The truck must have sat for a long time for it to rust like that.
sand off the loose stuff and get some phosphoric acid to wash off the remaining surface rust. It's not as harsh as muriatic (aka hydrochloric) acid, which will dissolve the good metal along with the rust.
All the acids will dissolve the good metal along with the rust. Some are much faster. Within a minute or two, you'll be done with muriatic acid and have it installed before the phosphoric has even shown a difference.
Make certain you neutralize whatever you use when you are done.
Getting back around to this. I started on the cover today and what is bothering me is how pitted it is. I don't know if evopo rust will solve it? Should I get a new one? I can use the acid but I am concerned about the pitting. Thanks for your time.
Nothing more than my opinion and what I'd do, take all that into consideration.
I; simply use a wire wheel on a drill, remove as much of the loose rust as possible then bolt the assembly back together. Unless the pitted area is actually leaking or porous this shouldn't cause any huge longer-term issues. Like already suggested painting or coating the inside would probably result in that flaking off which you don't want.
