My Elderbrock carb with electric chock loads up when first started. On 302. Not sure if issue started after I started using ethanol. After it warms up it seems normal. Any ideas?
I seriously doubt it has anything to do with ethanol. If your fast idle is too slow, it will load up. If it still loads up when both the choke and fast idle are adjusted per spec, try a wider choke opening.
Some good suggestions above. I think Ross is right on with his thoughts. I just wanted to add you mentioned you have an electric choke. How is it wired? Right to the IGN switch I hope, but IF you are using a ballast resistor and coil, it should not be wired to the 12 volt side of the coil. If it's done that way because of the ballast resistor you will be running a lower voltage to your coil, giving you lower spark voltage and your electric choke will come off later since its voltage will be lower too.
Also check to see if the choke "pull off" is correctly set. I am not all that familiar with Edelbrocks, but the choke plate should probably open around 3/16 of an inch when the engine is running from a dead cold start. If the choke pull off is not correct it will load up right away until the choke thermostat is warm enough to finally start pulling the choke plate open farther and the engine starts running better.
Interesting post been reading it. I had a holly on my 312 Y Block but it was obsolete and I bought a Eddlebrock the fuel inlet was on the right side so I had to redo the fuel line and relocate the engine coil and resistor to the fire wall. I want to hook up a throttle, but has an automatic choke. Wish it was all manual. Brain storming a way to hook up the throttle. AJ
About 10 years ago I had a carburetor with a hot air choke I absolutely couldn't get to work right so I converted it to a manual choke with that very kit. And that was something I noticed. That not only could I adjust the choke, but the fast idle cam adjusted with the choke of course giving me a somewhat crude but usable throttle control. You could make the fast idle stay on longer in colder weather.
I was in an O'Reillys just the other day and in the peg board section where they have the Dorman line of HELP products I thought I saw one of those kits.

I always have to adjust my Edelbrock for warm weather and now for cold weather start up.
Thanks Ross for Link. I printed it off and will adjust as needed. I agree these carberated motors need adjusting per different seasons. I'll let you know how I faired out. Thanks all for input. Cheers
Not sure why, but Edelbrock carbs & ethanol is a recipe for varnishing. This is not a general statement either.
I have several classics mustangs with Edelbrock carbs where I ran ethanol in them for 3 years and each year I ended up having to rebuild the carb due to excessive varnishing. After the 3rd year of doing that I switch to 91 or higher gas (after fresh carb rebuilds) and I have never rebuilt the carbs on those mustangs again since then and it's been probably 8 years.
I run 91 in my F100 along with valvoline racing 40 wt. Also use Marvel Mystery oil in my fuel winter I will add avgas. It stores better. My Eddlebrock only has about 200 miles sense I installed it. AJ
I siphined the ethanol out and filled with non-ethanol . And added seaform. Seemed to help alot with idle and a little on loading up on cold start up. I don't think my Eldlebrook has the adjusting screws
refered to. I have put it into hibernation now, but want to research system. Thanks for any help.
