NP271F transfer case differences

Hey fellas, can you talk to me about the NP271F transfer cases? I have/had one behind my ZF5 and it nearly left me stranded in the back country of Idaho lol. I coasted for miles down to a little town where I was able to call for a tow. Anyway I think a shift fork(s) is broken? It’s like it’s stuck in neutral and won’t go in any gear.

Are all them the same? I kinda want to just find another one and swap it in. Mine has the manual lever on it do I need to find one that’s the same or Will a esof unit swap over to the linkage etc. Were the autos and manual NP271F’s the same? Mine had 31 splines if I counted correctly. Thanks for any info guys i appreciate it!

Andrew

271 is manual shift. 273 is electric shift esof. Manual and automatic trans are different splines. But you can swap in input shafts in them if your handy.

Thanks for the help that makes sense. I took the case apart and it looks like the bushings failed on the range fork which took out the fork. I’m seeing an updated range fork option but not sure what that’s about.

Thanks again for the help! Turns out there’s two NP/NV271F’s. Early and late. I have the early transfer case but it appears and though I have the updated main shaft, slider and fork. Kinda hard to tell as the fork is chewed up pretty bad.

Anyway the range fork gave out and destroyed itself. I gotta say the internals of this case are HUGE I’m surprised I broke one lol!

Still trying to figure out the best option moving forward. This might be the ticket to upgrade my early case (splash oil) to pressurized oil like the later more reliable cases?

https://shop.broncograveyard.com/mob...ctinfo/716210/

Sounds like I can use some of the internals from a NP273F and gain a synchros…. Might be an option too.

Thanks for following along,

Andrew

Thats a good price on that kit. One I seen somewhere else was over double that. I saved link. These posts make me want to update mine just to be safe.

I've seen the syncro mod and imo that wouldn't be a needed upgrade. Your not going to gain anything from it.

I'm not sure if you have seen the post on my thread, but since you're the only other person to have experienced the all bolts coming out make sure your splines are in good shape in the transmission output and transfer case input. Don't make the same mistake I did and send it for 5k and lose all your splines.

Thanks fellas, my splines look great so I definitely dodged a bullet there.

Makes me wonder how long this thing was working loose and how that contributed to frying my range fork?! Life’s little mysteries I guess haha.

Thanks man that’s helpful!

I think I’m on the lookout for a 2001.5 and newer case used. I’m seeing them for $450-700 in the local scrap yards with decent miles.

Ready to get this beast back on the road already it sucks to be down a vehicle haha.

Yes the same thing happened to me. All six bolts came loose for reasons unknown. I don’t know if that put load on the range fork and that’s why it wiped out or if it’s just a coincidence but that’s where I’m at.

If you can, upgrading to pressure lube is much more reliable than relying on splash lube. I had the exact same failure and the truck didn't even have 60k on it when it died.

I bought a remanufactured tcase from All Star Standard Transmission out of FL back in 2019 for not much more than what that junkyard is quoting you if memory serves. Give them a call first.
