That's quite a run no? Any thoughts on right above the radio on the dash surface?
Whenever I have installed a microphone in a car for a cellphone (during the early days of 3 watt coil corded analog handsets of the late 80's), I have mounted the microphone in the ceiling, either above the visor, or above the inside rear view mirror, or above the A pillar trim.
Mounting the microphone on the dashboard picks up the blower fan and wind noise of the heating, ventilation, and defrost system. A dashboard mounted microphone also tends to pickup more engine noise.
Having the microphone overhead makes the occupant voice the nearest source of sound that the microphone hears.
The wire should be long enough. An FTE member with an ATOTO A6 mounted his microphone on top of the A Pillar.
Some of the fancier ATOTO's have a built in cooling fan. All the more reason to move the microphone away from right above the radio.
Finally, having the microphone overhead encourages the driver to look up, rather than look down toward the head unit / dash board when the other end of the line complains about not being able to hear. When such a complaint occurs while the mic is overhead, the driver will remain "heads up", which is safer.
Post pics if you've mounted the mic at the top of the A pillar. I have mine there, just dangling from a short piece of the wire, and it's unusable. I'd like to see how you guys have mounted it so it faces the driver.
I put mine in the "center" just to the right of the rear view mirror... I have a JVC stereo, and works good there. Plus, if other people are in my truck they can talk too without being hard to pickup.
I called my daughter through the internal microphone on the Atoto A8 as a test with the hvac running full force and she said there was some static but it was sufficient. Granted this test took place at idle but I might not bother with the external mic then.
I called her from my aftermarket smart rearview mirror and she and another person gave up trying to understand me and that was obliviously much further away from the vents.
For my Kenwood I have it on the top of the steering column with double sided tape. Works well and no complaints about the audio quality on a phone call.
