By saying "locking out 6th gear," I mean using the plus (+) and minus (-) buttons to lock out 6th gear, or any other gear, by pressing the minus button and taking 6th off the display which makes 5th gear or any other lower gear the top gear...
I also used to drive around in Tow/Haul Mode which helped IMO. I may have to start again now after seeing the video from Bill... just thought of this (T/H Mode) now actually... when the trans is not in T/H mode, it lingers in the higher gears at lower speeds, which lugs the engine.

I read your second sentence too fast, and missed the "not in T/H", and thought "??".
I'm going to try using T/H mode for commuting over the next tank of fuel, just to see the effects. Thanks for the tip.

When the T/H mode is NOT engaged, the 6R140 stays in the higher gears in lower speeds that causes the engine to lug when you hit the throttle again... If you're slowing or braking...
Another factor, in my case, is that I've got the 10-speed auto. Guess I'll have to research T/H mode and how that affects the gearing with that particular trans. I'm sure that what you experience with your 6-speed is different than what someone with a 10-speed experiences...

Seeing 8-10 are overdrive gears it could be as simple as locking 9 & 10 out or 8th even and trying 7th incertain circumstances. A little testing would be needed.
I actually forgot about T/H mode... been driving it in now. I like it... it makes the truck almost feel like a stick shift truck. Some guys won't like that but it reminds me of my 94 4Runner in my garage with the 5 speed. Slows you down better on hills. Also reduces engine lugging as it downshifts more...
