Camshaft

I have a 77 F100 4x4 with a 429 and manual transmission.
I did a compression check and have 180 lbs on all cylinders.
In the process of doing this I hear mechanical noises and remove the valve covers and found 3 collapsed lifters. I am debating on which camshaft to go with if need be. I don't want anything to big just enough to make for easy cranking and still some get up and go I do like the sound of a thumper cam, but being that I want low end torque don't think that is the one to go with, Suggestions.
Thanks in advance/

You sure? 180 psi on all 8 cylinders doesn't sound like any lifters are collapsed. Was there a miss when running?

Lifters collapse sometimes because of excess internal clearance within the lifter allowing a fast leak down when the engine is shut off. If lifters will not pump up when the engine is started, then maybe trash in them and some can be cleaned out. Unless the cam lobes are themselves wiped into round circles with no humps, no reason to change the cam and the other 13 lifters. What oil do you run?
You can change to new lifters on a good used cam but you should break them in like you would a new whole package.. You should however, not use a new cam with worn lifters.

I suggest you change the cam if you have damaged lifters. The cam and lifters should be changed as a set only. I have a Comp cam in my 77 460. It is 34-227-4 Some mild lope and pretty good torque.

Yes 180 lbs, had 2 that were around 120 and squirted some oil in the cylinder and they both jumped up to 180. Think I am going to change camshaft, Hard to turnover with that much compression. Going to check and see if I can get the lift on it before I pull it. Had a 429 years ago and the car with a 2 barrel carb would turn sideways before it moved forward. This cam doesn't have that low end power, which is another reason to change cam.

I understand changing cams because we just want something different. I've changed a few cam & lifter sets, but I never pulled the engine to do it.

Oil squirts will better seal rings.
