bad lifters??
79 block .030 over re-build
10.5:1 pistons
dove heads ported to scotty's (Reincarnation)specs
new springs, roller rockers, p-rods, guideplates, valves
34-239-4 comp cam
832-16 lifters---hydraulic
the springs and lifters were the recommended comp cams
the truck has seen about 2k miles(mainly cruisin with a few WOT stabs--but only to 5500 RPMs)
my problem was i went to adjust the valves and its my lifters that are bad(according to a friend that is an excellent engine builder and tuner)
is it possible to get bad lifters???
i was gonna order a new set of the comp cams for the $90 but should i look into a different set or manufacturer that would be better?
thanks in advance!!!
there not pumpin up (hydraulic lifters) , try to adjust warmed up with no success, then cold and then start it and it just "ticks" like crazy (no change from when warm)---finger tight then 1/4---1/2 turn
there is no clearance issues or any of that stuff either, upper end only has 3-500 miles on it, lower 2000 miles
it was fine when it was first put back together (soaked lifters in oil overnight) so we thought it just needed valve adjustment,
im lookin for some input on what everyone else is thinkin
i heard comp cams had an issue with some of them 1-2 years ago(built outside the US)
thanks again
another thing with lifters is the break in is very very important that the cam manufacturers breakin procedure is followed exactly. seen a lot of cams and lifter wiped out because of this.
the other problem is that all the major oil manufacturers have reduced or elimanated the zinc in their oils and this by most accounts causes a lot of problem with cam break in and life of the cams. there are a few maufactures out there offering special oils for cam break in (Joe Gibbs for one and i think Royal Purple) so take a look around.
before changing lifters, check the cam lobes to makes sure they weren't damaged also. you might be changing the cam also as usually the bad lifter takes out the cam lobe also.
