I had a local shop do some upholstery work and carpet replaced. We used a molded carpet from OC Auto Carpet and laid that over 2 layers of Killmat and jute padding. The carpet just doesn't lay flat on the floor nicely. It's got a bubble on both sides where the transmission tunnel meets the firewall. They tried to push the carpet into the corner but it's too tight to the point where the accelerator just touches the carpet when I press down all the way.
I'm thinking the entire carpet was laid down too far back causing the molded contour to be out of place. I'll be discussing with the shop my dissatisfaction and look into using a different manufacturer of moulded carpets. The only other one I could find is Auto Custom Carpet. If I make the move to replace it, I might go with black carpet and then eventually go to a dark charcoal headliner.
Any thoughts, has anyone replaced their carpet using either OC or ACC or ...?
I have used ACC on cars before, just not an X. I am in the process of upgrading my X and when I get to the interior, going to install new carpet. I plan on getting ACC. If you beat me to it, let me know your experience.,
I should have said, considering the carpet I've been looking at the same piece, color and option for mass backing, is 45% cheaper at OC vs ACC despite apparently being identical...
I've been toying with buying a regular cab manual floor shift carpet for my stick swapped Excursion just to get a better fit over the taller manual floor hump.
I’m seriously considering replacing the carpet again
As much as I hate doing things twice and paying twice, I want it done right. When I say right, I mean as good as the original factory or better. I’m still unsure if what’s in there now is a crappy mold or the installer didn’t place it right. If the mold is right, then the installer placed it too far back leaving all that room around the tunnel at the firewall.
there has to be someone who has bought one of these who can confirm if theirs fit correctly.
Again I have installed ACC in many vehicles and never had an issue, Sometimes you have to trim it here or there, but it's not that big of a deal to fix.
If you want to wait 4 weeks, I will be installing new ACC in my X and can update you.. LOL
If the carpet was laid too far back, and was molded correctly, than you'll have issues with flatness, and proper contours where the front seats rise. You'll have a continued abnormality elsewhere as the floor pans have many highs and lows. In some cases new after market carpet needs time to remember its molded shape from crunched in a box to in the vehicle. The best way to tell is to remove the front seats, and verify the carpet follows the floor pan contours for the front seats, then see where the carpet falls everywhere else. Pic for reference of the floor pan under the seat.
The shop told me they layed the carpet out overnight for that very reason. They did say that they used OCC carpet on three F250’s after my Excursion and they had similar issues.
They said one fix is to cut/sew seams to make it lay down properly. I’m not sure that’s the right fix.
My thought is to replace the carpet with one from ACC but from what I’ve gathered, ACC makes the carpet for OCC.
I have lunch Friday with the shop owner to discuss my choices.
At the end of the day, I want it done right and not some half *** product or labor.
I read and posted in this thread hoping to reach the OP. His pictures along with another poster who went black on their headliner are part of what's driving me to the color black. Unfortunately his pictures don't show around the tunnel at the firewall. This is where my trouble spot is and what's most concerning is it impedes the accelorator's end of travel.
Oh I really dislike doing things twice but ever since I can remember, it seems so many things have to be done twice! Heck, the seats had to be done twice, why would the carpet be any different? lol
I called OC Auto carpet and they openly state that are a dealer for ACC so when you buy an auto carpet from OC Auto, you’re getting an ACC carpet.
Also they say that when it’s layed out in the vehicle, it will fit exactly as OEM. They even guarantee as long as you don’t trim or cut it, they will stand behind it.
we will see in a few weeks.
