My glowplugs are ran to a button in the cab. I can here it draw more when I hold the button. Truck seems to start decent. It's not that cold out but it smokes fairly good. Should I be holding that button after the truck is started? What I'm asking is when it's cold out, do the glowplugs run for a little while after truck is running or no?
In the case of a pushbutton run to the cab, the glow plugs recieve power as for as long as the button is held down. This method greatly extends the life expectancy of the glow plugs because they are only on during that time. (Unless the one who did the work left the trigger wire going to the PCM connected. A scenario that I very highly doubt.)
Yes it will smoke more when cold, but as soon as you've driven it six blocks, the combustion chambers are heated up enough to clear things up for the day.
You only need to hold that button down if your exhaust is being carried into the neighbor's garage and filling it with the same smoke. Otherwise, just drive it away and you'll see how quickly things clear up. Glow plugs's original purpose was to just get that cantankerous old diesel started on a cold morning. After that, there is no real need for them to be on.
Not 100% confident on who installed it if it's done correctly. They seem to work, tho. Wich wire is the trigger wire? I see there's a red wire discounted from the relay is that it?
