I took the front cover off my engine to replace gasket from a coolant leak near top around oil cooler and it was a lot dirtier than i expected. I cant dedicate a lot of time to cleaning and reassembling during the work week. Do you guys think my truck will be fine to sit in the driveway minus front cover for a couple days or should a put back asap. Also any tips on cleaning off grease and mating surfaces would be appreciated i started scraping around and the surfaces scored very easily but gunk is clinging on tough. picture of the inner mess
Spray some LPS-1 or WD40 on the area and cover it with a cut-up plastic bag when leaving it.
Scoring the surfaces is really not a good thing. You can get softer brass scapers if your technique is not quite honed. They will run you $15-20, but that is way less expensive than screwing up a block or the front cover by about 50x.
Yep. You could stuff some non-lint rags that are soaked with the oils, too. You want to keep dirt out and prevent rusting as much as possible. You can also get brass brushes to use on the surfaces to clean the old materials off. Harbor Freight has them, and so do hardware stores, big box or not.
