I've heard people talk about "upgrading" to the steering box out of a 78-79 and it being AMAZING
I've also heard people talk about just buying a steering box from Red head or Blue Top and sounds like those are direct replacements of the same year and being fantastic.
Is there a consensus on either being more of the bee's knees?
AND/OR is there any advantage to buying a 78-79 steering box from Red Head or Blue Top and then you get double the amazing?
There is no direct replacement integral steering for your pickup.
The Benchworks conversion is without question the best steering upgrade for a highboy. the only drawback is the price, which I think it's worth every penny. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Long-term I'm there.... but short term - it's not in the budget.
I can live with sloppy steering but don't love it.
Would you say spend the $300 for a redhead for a year or so, or just live with sloppy steering for a year or so, then do this?
All you're going to get is a good replacement box for your existing junk steering set up. a 78-79 style box requires a homemade version of the Benchworks kit.
I would live with it as is until I could do a conversion and fix it right. if you plan on keeping it you're going to want to do it anyway .
If your box is totally wasted it might be worth fixing. but normally it's only one of the places you're getting slop and of course the oil leaks will still be there.
I would determine how bad the box it and decide , if it's not horrible it's not worth spending the money on is a conversion is the end game.
