E4od torque convertor install

97 7.3. Installing my e4od I just rebuilt. Torque convertor must have unseated as I put tranny in position. Did start tightening few bolts to reattach to engine before I noticed convertor too far forward. Hoping I didn’t damage the pump.

question I have is for convertor. Any reason I can’t just push and rotate from where it’s at to get convertor to engage pump gear? Or do I have to pull out to do so?

If it was me, take down the trans, pull TC and inspect inside trans

I broke a pump that way on a 69 Mustang FB years ago, Didnt take much force either.
I think its three clunks when installing a TC and we only felt two. That was 35 years ago though so my memory isnt 100% on it.

Appreciate the response. I feel pretty good I stopped early enough. Main question is on the convertor. I assume it’s just a given on engaging input shaft and outer splines of pump. Mainly just the gear on pump that’s the stopper I believe. If that is the case, can I just push and turn from where’s its currently seated to engage last thud aka pump gear. Or is there a reason to pull out convertor then push and turn back in.

You could turn and seat the converter. But you will not know if the pump or converter is damaged.

This is my first transmission rebuild. I’m not gonna want any doubt that the pump is ok or not. It helps that I have a second pump and would just need to swap parts into it. If I pull the pump to check whether it got damaged what am I looking for? Like I said I barely tightened the trans to engine and have a hard time seeing what would break with light pressure.

What is it that typically gets damaged? What should I be checking? Cracks in housing, seals? Do I need to separate pump housing again or is damage apparent from outside the pump housing. Thanks again for the replies/help.
