Driving down the interstate over the weekend...pull put from behind some slower traffic to pass...increase the throttle somewhat, nothing over aggressive...maybe 15 psi boost...and boom. Starts blowing some black smoke for a mile or two. Noticeable change in engine tone, but other than no boost, no other changes in performance. Engine temps stayed normal...no alarms...nothing. So I kept trucking. Arrived at my destination roughly sixty miles later and popped the hood. Of course I assume the worse...blown turbo, but I could still here the turbo spooling and whistling. Got to lookin around and found that the plastic connector at the throttle body had blown in half, with half no longer present. So I ended up driving back home...roughly 120 miles...no issues at all, other than no boost.
So my question is, can I drive the truck without concern until the replacement tube arrives?
dont drive, dont start and cover the hole while you wait for part.
What year?
Don't drive it like Scott said...
Scott, I think it's an 11 to 14 with the plug in sensor on the CCV tube that runs to the intake. My 16 doesn't have that and I believe I remember reading that it was updated in 15...
I stand corrected... My 16 doesn't have that sensor and plug on the CCV tube that runs between the box and the intake...
When I installed my S&S DPK kit, after I took a test drive, my Rudy's CAC cold pipe (aftermarket), came apart... Made a loud noise. I was climbing a hill and I drove slowly up the hill to turn around to go back down to get home... The SL climbed quickly because of the extra air getting into the intake from the pipe being open. So I have to imagine it was over fueling because of the extra air.
I wish that were the case...the S&B kit doesn't come with a new retainer spring. The original replacement kit that I ordered from fordpartsgiant apparently does come with a retainer spring. Unfortunately, none of those kits are available from any dealership parts department.
One other question, I assume the aluminum piece where the now broken plastic piece connected is the throttle body. I noticed the internal blade is open on mine. Is that normal? I would thought it would be closed when not in operation.
