I'm looking to get different ring and pinion sets for my 1983 f250. I have a 300 L6 and an 8.8 rear diff. I was wondering what my front differential might be on that year and engine combo
They made 8 lug 8.8 rear axles. They were installed in regular F250's. The heavier duty rearends where full float axles and were installed in f250HD trucks. These are the ones with the snoot sticking out in the center of the rear wheel. The 302 installed in the f250 was always in a regular f250, not a f250HD. But 300 sixes where installed in f250's and f250HD's.
Whether it's a f250 or a f250HD, the stock front axle in a 4x4 regular cab would be the dana 44TTB. The dana 50 was stock only in the f250 extended cabs, and the early f350's. There are some special order regular cab f250HD's out there with the dana 50ttb, but they are not a standard offering, but special order. You can tell if you have a dana 50 ttb, the front GVWR for the front axle is usually over 4000lbs.
P.S. These lighter duty f250's had what they called a "semi-float" rear axle. Besides the 8.8, they also made dana 60 semi-float axle, and possibly a 10.25 semi-float, not sure about the last one.
