went to local NAPA store today to get an oil filter for my DD. The man brought me out a filter...naked !! He said they are eliminating boxes to save money ???
Also he told me that all their Craftsman line is close out priced...they are dropping the Craftsman line of tools..
Napa has never been a price leader and Craftsman tools would seem to have settled into sort of an afterthought status following the demise of Sears. I would prefer Napa stay afloat - don't know if either of these changes will help.
Interesting. Our Napa is expanding. They are probably doubling the size of their building.
I don't go there often because the customer service was lacking. Although the last time I went they were helpful.
I guess it makes sense to wrap the filters in plastic and just go with that. But I always put my old filter back in the box for cleaner disposal.
I'm guessing the decision to drop Craftsman has more to do with their quality than NAPA's demise. After Stanley bought the brand from Sears, they tried to bring back production from China, built a $90M factory in Texas but stocked it with inferior machinery from Belarus, which failed miserably. Lots of stories about it on the web and youtube. The factory is now being shuttered.
The quality of the NAPA stores in my area varies. I prefer not to go to the closes to me because the manager is kind of a jerk, I go to the next one in the other direction, a little farther but the manager knows his stuff. I do go to the closer one on weekends because they have later hours and is open on Sunday. No other store in the area is open on Sunday. What I find strange is the store closes to me doesn't communicate with the other stores in the area. Most you can ask to check inventory at other stores but there are few in my area that can't do it. They all tap into the same central warehouse in the middle of Milwaukee.
The manager in the second closest store doesn't have the friendliest personality but he knows his stuff.
A few years back the temp sensors in the heads in the flattie in my panel truck stopped working so I decided I wanted to install mechanical gauges. I needed threaded adapters to install them. I went to the local well stocked hardware store and all off the big box stores and the MacParts auto parts stores, no one had them. I had one for sample. I went to this NAPA store and told the counter guy what I was doing and showed him the one adapter bushing I had. He took me over the the brass fitting cabinet and as we were going through the drawers the manager walked by with his arms full of merchandize, looked at the fitting and said, "Installing temp sensors in a flathead? They're over on that display." and nodded his head at a spinning display. Didn't miss a beat. He doesn't have the greatest personality but he knows his parts. I appreciate that and am willing to pay a little more to keep him in business.
filter wasn't wrapped ...just a filter handed to me... my closest store is run by parts chimps now the one 15 miles away is a little better but it's about like autozone
We lost our local NAPA. They were a family owned franchise. They still have the best automotive machine and hydraulic hose shop in the area, but now sell "Auto Value" parts.
Our NAPA stores are locally owned and they recently opened a new store for 1 Ton and up trucks. That makes sense here cause everybody drives a truck and the area is still ag, construction and logging.
I use NAPA because they are the best in the valley - 4 stores and because they gave me a charge account many years ago - I think they got tired of seeing 17 checks a month from me and figured an account would be less work for them. lol
I my have missed it but when I was a buyer for an small retail auto store oil filters could be bought in cases boxed or unboxed so I had to always specify on out PO we needed boxed and UPCd product. There was a significant price difference but our stores used POS (register system) that needed bar coded product.

is NAPA going down the chute ???
john
Hey John!
On that unboxed filter, did it at least have a plastic dust cover over the inlet/outlet end of the filter?
About the tools. I really miss Sears. You could walk in and just buy one 3/4" crows foot if you wanted. Now days, you have to buy a whole set if you want just one.
I miss Radio Shack too.
