I know they came with the GT-40 intake and heads but that's about it. Anyone know if the pistons are forged, what other similarities it has with the 89-95 mustang 5.0L.
The early model 302 in Explorers (96 and early 97) came with GT40 heads and an external EGR setup. The late 97 and up came with GT40P heads and an internal EGR setup with DPFE.
The accessory brackets across the front are different on Explorers, along with th water pump because of the tight fit (they are smalller and less thick).
The throttle body is close to an 86+, but not an exact swap. The fuel pressure regulator is from the 91+.
The cam was also different - the one in Explorers is tiny (I don't have the exact numbers with me).
Other than that and the PCM configuration, there is not much different - and everything is interchangeable. There are a few other items that have to be different between them (superchargers, etc), but most parts from the 86+ will be interchangeable.
Hope some of this helps - I'll think of more later when I'm awake...

reverse that,96-97 internal egr just like the 89-93 stang
remove the intake elbow, damper, timming cover and water pump oil pan.an exact bolt in for 89-93,the explorer timming cover will work for the 94-95 stang but pump and damper still need changing
the 97 1/4-01 have the p heads and may require different headers

Doing a cheap build up on my EFI 5.0L and came across a couple of stangers who have add the Explorer intakes. Finding out about the GT-40 heads is a bonus! Now I've found a complete 96 Explorer 5.0L for sale, it's in good shape, 50,000 miles on it, what is a good price to pay for that.
$2500 would be a good price - if you can get the entire setup - computer and harnesses and all. My personal preference would be a 96 or early 97 Explorer setup if you can get it. The EGR setup and other things are easier to deal with than the late 97+ in my opinion...
But the GT40P's on the later models are a nice thought also...
What would be a fair price to ask for 96 explorer engine core? (no heads, no intake, harnesses or computer etc...) I am buy the motor but will be keeping the heads and intake, selling what's left.
Thanks for all the info, you've been a great help to me making some buying decisions.
Once you get everything off, you are basically down to a regular 302 block. I haven't looked into used blocks in a while (just new ones), so I don't know what they are going for anymore...
No problem on the help... that is what forums are for!
