It looks like the harmonic balancer is broken as I dont see the outer ring.
See where the timing pointer is and no ring?
Wonder when it went bad for how long it was driven for?
OR
Is the center crank bolt missing?
If so wonder if someone tried to use a 3 finger puller to remove it and pulled the outer ring off?
Maybe they still tried to pull it with out removing the bolt?

Hey Dave,

I am going into this thinking total rebuild. I will not know any more until I go see it, which is a few weeks off. From what I have been told, it is original and never been touched in terms of overhaul. And the price is rather cheap—as they seem to be for the 351ms (but not the cleveland proper).

It's still a good basic truck motor...

Hey Max,

I think the sump pickup is in the rear on the 351m….And, yes, it is actually a pretty good motor—let us not forget what the C version did on the race track.

A lot of people bag on the M for it being a smog motor, but, really, it has a lot of unique potential that only came from the C series. The reason for ALL this was the crap being handed down from our government and the insurance companies who punished “big block” owners.

Yeah, back in the day, I had buddies while I was in the USAF,1970's, that had Fords with both 351's. So I have a little knowledge about them.

Just because it's related to the c doesn't make it a barn burner. Find a 400 crankshaft and drop it in along with some flat top 400 pistons, and then you will have something.

There are many threads on doing this. Here is one. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...sion-help.html

Hopefully you can strike a bargain with the current owner. Does he have the carburetor, water pump and other accessories to sell with it? If not then surely you could get it on the cheap.

Update:

I got it. Not sure of the year yet, because the numbers are rubbed off on the valve cover, but this is pretty decent shape to have most the valve cover stickers still on it. I will say the part # for the AC bracket is E0TH—so at least an 80? Intake is D8 part number. Will look at casting on block to make sure.

Also nothing else came with it. What you see here is it. Engine spins easy. But I am going to rebuild anyway so…..

I can tell from the white sticker, it was made in the Cleveland 2 plant.

I wonder if the auto machine shop will have more info. Looking forward to your build.

Have you searched google for that D7TE ?

https://www.google.com/search?q=Ford...hrome&ie=UTF-8

What size spark plugs, are they a 5/8" socket ?

The label calls for ASF-52 which is 5/8

From what I understand, the castings were not made to order, and so, on my 1980 F350, the casting is…..D7TE.

So I suspect that this engine came out of a 1980+ Ford given it came with A/C (according to the labels on the engine) and the AC bracket is stamped E0TH.

Not being a Ford guy, I do seem to recall the Cleveland heads had 5/8" plugs and the Windsor heads had 13/16" ? I think we all know the Cleveland's were the heads to have.
