I replaced the old starter on my 1969 f100 (300 c.i. inline 6) and only got about 5 starts out of it before it stopped working correctly. When I removed the starter, the starter drive seemed to be spinning freely, like it was broken. So I ordered a rebuild kit from LMC, installed the new starter drive, and reinstalled the starter. I only got a few starts out of the new starter drive before it crapped out as well. Does anyone have ideas as to why this part keeps breaking?
Odds are it and the first one were rebuilt starter drives. Also, some of the new ones are junk. You really need to buy that sort of part at a local parts house that way if it fails, just take it back and they will replace it.
2X Dave. He is right. The thing in common is the starter you bought. Take it back and have them warranty it. I, personally like to support local businesses. I wouldn't buy one on-line.
Mass market rebuilt starters come with rebuilt starter drives. When you compare a new drive to a rebuilt one you will see that the teeth have been ground back and reshaped. Sometime as much as 1/8”. This sometimes starts to chip away on the flywheel teeth. Local rebuilders around here always installed new drives.
