My son and I are in the process of redoing a 1973 F100 with a 390. We have already done the fuel system and added a Holley Sniper 2. We are getting a lot of issues once it is hot. I am tracing it down to electrical issues. We still have the stock 1G alternator, and I do not think we have enough "juice" to run the system.
What model, and year is the best 3G for me to swap out with? I am also going to replace all the grounds, and battery cables.
Yes it is still charging the battery. We are finding that once the engine is hot, the AFR goes wonky and it starts cutting out. I have already replaced the O2 sensor, and are tracking back to EL at this time. Fuel Pressure is solid.
I've seen a lot of videos and whatnot about RF interference causing issues like this, coming from the distributor/coil/alternator. I've never messed with one though
I went with the 1994-1996 Taurus 3.8 V6 (bought it from RockAuto), comes with the soft-start regulator which delays load to avoid belt squeal. I bought this pigtail: https://vintageautogarage.com/3g-ford-alternator-plug/ and I was already wired up for a 1-wire alternator so I had the correct cables and circuit breaker already setup.
If you specifically want a 3g, disregard, but I went to a GM style 1 wire (I believe this exact one https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-810308/, you can get them in higher Amps) and I didn't cut up any of the factory harness, just ran the factory output wire (Yellow I believe) from the 1 wire alternator output terminal bypassing the factory regulator. Not to keep trying to steer you one way or another. I believe you will lose function of the factory gauge as it is regardless.
