Lost Cause

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Jul-02 AT 00:40 AM (EST)]I have been thinking and thinking because pretty soon I need to pick a major for school. My problem is....I have NO idea whatsoever what I want to do with my life. Has this ever happened to yall? I mean, most people I know have some clue as to what they like doing....but me....all my lightbulbs are burnt out. Its kind of depressing, I am such a bad decision maker when I am under a lot of pressure! What to do, oh what to do....

I have been there, Jen. And I still don't know what to do. I couldn't decide back then, and I couldn't decide now. I dropped out of college a year after attending because of the lack of finding a major.

Maybe you might want to explore yourself; find what you really like and make a career out of it if possible.

Don't give up the ship. I would say to ask yourself some questions. Like do you like being outdoors or is working in an office more to your likeing? Are you good with numbers, technical data or do you like working with your hands? Are you a people person or do you like working alone? Figure out what you like to do best and start there.

My son was the same way. He always liked art and loved to draw. He also likes music and is very, very good on the guitar. He put himself through school working part time. He majored in music for a while and wanted to be a professional musican. Then he decided he wanted to get into video production and worked toward that goal for a while. That worked out for a while but then wanted something else so he thought about being an architect and took some classes for that. Then he took a yr. off. Well he finally came around full circle and got into computer graphics and web design. Now he draws on the computer. He just graduated after 8 yrs. with a B.A. and he did it all himself.

So my point is, it's alright to be undecided. You just got to figure out what you like to do and what your best at. It might take some searching and you might discover you like something you never thought of. Or that your good at something you never knew. Don't get discouraged. Best of luck.

Jen: Have you gone and taken a test that shows what your interest are? It then provides you with what other people similiar to you choose for a career. It shows which degrees are needed, how much math, etc.

Any college should be able to provide it to you. It was very helpful to me in my sophmore year of college to take the test. I was able to realize my limitations and pick the degree that would enable me to pass school and get a job

Another thought is what is everyone hiring for.
But I would go with what you like doing best if possible.

The test will show what jobs are popular and your odds of getting a job from them. Example: You want a biology degree? They are as common as sand on a beach and the starting salary is (guess here, due to time) 18K.

It will help you find the job that you enjoy doing and getting paid an amount that you expect.

I know how you feel Jen..don't worry bout it too much. If you stress about it too much then you will work yourself up and then never be able to decide anything. Just go and start with basics...they are pretty much the same for everyone anyway. I am going back in the fall and the first thing I am doing is changing my major. Remember..you've always got time. don't worry too much about it

Heres something that might help you out Jen: First you find something you like or you like doing, then find out if youu are good at ir, do this many times so you get lots of options, then choose the best one for you. And last but not lest then find someone to pay you for what you love doing after you have gone through college in that particlar field.

My problem is i can't find a colleg/tech school/university that offers a degree in what i want to do, but i haven't looked as hard as i could.

Jen, No one has mentioned this so let me be the first.

Ready?

Take some time to volunteer yourself for as many things as you can handle.
This to me is one of the freshest outlooks towards looking for
"a Future". The rewards are unbeleivable for both you and those you volunteer your time to.
The people you meet, the people you work with will undoubtably " Show you who you are and where you belong in this world".

Volunteering can open up a whole new whole world of possiblities that can help set your course/career for life.

Try it .....You'll like it.
