My 08 Explorer has developed some chassis squeaks. I'm sure it the ball joints, or at least one of them. Is there a special way to determine which one(s) or, am I right in just thinking I might as well just replace all of them?
If you notice play in them, replacing them would be justified. But if they are still tight, just squeaky, then you should be able to get more life out of them.
What I've done in the past to locate a squeaky joint on Fords is to try to figure out which side it's coming from, then I either poke a small hole in one dust boot and insert the straw from a can of aerosol white lithium grease through the small hole and give it a squirt. Take it for a short drive and see if the noise goes away. If you find the right joint you probably won't even make it out of your driveway before the noise goes away. If the noise doesn't change or is still somewhat present, then pick another joint and repeat the process.
There are also needles with grease zerks on them so you can poke through the boot and grease the joint with chassis grease all in one move.
Thanks. I will see if I can get some kind of boot filling grease zerk and give it a try. The joints are still tight. I'm guessing putting some lube back in them would get me another 4 or 5000 miles.
